Revolutionizing Journalism: TIME Magazine Gets with the Times Using AI

In what feels like a pretty smart move for an old company, TIME has partnered with OpenAI and ElevenLabs to integrate AI with trusted journalism and innovative content creation tools.

OpenAI gains access to TIME's extensive archive, allowing AI tools like ChatGPT to provide users with reliable news content, enriching its database with over 100 years of articles. This does raise some copyright infringement questions.

ElevenLabs will enhance TIME's audio and video content through AI-powered tools, aiming to create more dynamic and engaging storytelling. Bringing modern energy and access to older stories may be a fascinating update to TIME’s long-stagnant archive.

Most importantly, this collaboration aims to bring accurate information to a wider audience through advanced AI technologies.

Perspectives

Mark Howard, COO of TIME: "This partnership with OpenAI advances our mission to expand access to trusted information globally."

Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI: "We’re partnering with TIME to make it easier for people to access news content through our AI tools."

ElevenLabs Spokesperson: "Our technology will enable TIME to deliver more engaging and dynamic content to their audiences."

AI on a High Horse: Killing Creativity in Scriptwriting

Writing a script is hard enough. Imagine having a spineless editor, sitting on a moral high horse, scrutinizing and altering every word you type.

A recent study reveals that OpenAI’s ChatGPT faces significant limitations in scriptwriting due to overzealous content moderation. Researchers from Penn Engineering, Haverford College, and Penn State found that ChatGPT often censors even PG-rated scripts, potentially stifling creativity. The study highlights a tension between necessary content moderation and artistic freedom, suggesting that current AI models might be too restrictive for creative industries.

The frustration over letting moderators decide what is “too mature” is concerning. However, the bigger concern may be relying on moderators to make judgments on comedy.

Imagine what ChatGPT would do to Dave Chapelle, Joan Rivers, Chris Rock, or Lucille Ball.

Perspectives

Danaë Metaxa, Raj and Neera Singh Assistant Professor in CIS at Penn Engineering: "If AI is used to generate cultural content, such as TV scripts, what stories won't be told?"

Sorelle Friedler, Shibulal Family Computer Science Professor at Haverford College: "69% of real scripts wouldn’t make it through the content filters, including some PG-rated ones."
